Your journey begins as you land at Guwahati Airport / Railway Station, where a warm welcome awaits. After meeting your driver, you set out on a scenic drive towards Shillong, famously called the “Scotland of the East.” The road winds through hills and valleys, and soon you arrive at the breathtaking Umiam Lake – a vast reservoir framed by pine forests and rolling meadows. A photo stop here is a must, as the tranquil waters reflect the skies and the surrounding greenery. Children enjoy running along the banks, while adults take in the calm of the mountains. Continuing the drive, you reach Shillong by late afternoon. After hotel check-in, step out for an evening walk around Police Bazaar, the vibrant heart of the city. Shops glow with lights, street vendors offer snacks, and the festive vibe of December makes the atmosphere even more joyful. With the cool Shillong breeze setting the mood, your first day ends on a perfect note.Overnight Stay: Shillong
Day 2 – 23 Dec: Shillong Local Sightseeing
Wake up to the fresh mountain air of Shillong. After a hearty breakfast, begin exploring the city that blends colonial charm with Khasi culture. The first stop is the Don Bosco Museum, a fascinating seven-storey museum showcasing the heritage of Northeast India through art, artifacts, and exhibitions – a wonderful learning experience for both adults and children. Next, relax at Ward’s Lake, surrounded by manicured gardens and feeding fish in its waters. A visit to the Cathedral of Mary Help of Christians brings moments of serenity with its Gothic-style architecture and peaceful interiors. At Lady Hydari Park, the children enjoy the mini zoo and flower gardens. As the day progresses, drive up to Shillong Peak, the highest viewpoint in Meghalaya, offering panoramic views of the city and its lush surroundings. On a clear day, one can even see the plains of Bangladesh. By evening, return to Police Bazaar for café hopping or shopping for warm shawls, bamboo crafts, and souvenirs. Shillong’s nightlife is cozy yet lively, making it a delightful evening before resting for the next adventure.Overnight Stay: Shillong
Day 3 – 24 Dec: Shillong → Cherrapunjee (54 km / 2 hrs)
After breakfast, leave Shillong and drive towards Cherrapunjee, one of the wettest places on earth. The route itself is enchanting, with misty hills, pine forests, and sudden waterfalls cascading from cliffs. Your first halt comes at the spectacular Elephant Falls, a three-step waterfall surrounded by dense greenery. Further along the route, prepare to be amazed by Nohkalikai Falls, India’s tallest plunge waterfall, dropping dramatically from 1,115 feet into a turquoise pool below. Nearby, Seven Sisters Falls presents a mesmerizing sight as multiple streams fall side by side from a lofty cliff. The caves of Cherrapunjee add mystery to the journey – Arwah Cave, with its fossils and stalactites, and Mawsmai Cave, known for its limestone formations, provide thrilling exploration. The drive itself feels like an open-air museum of nature. By evening, arrive at your hotel in Cherrapunjee and soak in the misty weather, often enveloped by clouds that drift right into your room windows.Overnight Stay: Cherrapunjee
Day 4 – 25 Dec: Cherrapunjee – Double Decker Living Root Bridge Trek
This Christmas morning begins with an adventurous twist. After an early breakfast, set off towards Tyrna village, the base point for the trek to Nongriat, home of the iconic Double Decker Living Root Bridge. The trek involves descending more than 3,000 steps carved into the hillside, passing through dense forests, small streams, and hanging bridges. The children may enjoy part of the trek and spend time at Tyrna base village if the full hike feels too long for them. For those who continue, reaching the Double Decker Root Bridge feels like stepping into another world – the bridge is not built but grown from the living roots of ancient rubber trees, woven over centuries by Khasi villagers. The crystal-clear streams beneath, the forest canopy above, and the cool waters of natural pools nearby make this trek unforgettable. After spending time here, the return trek tests endurance but rewards with lifelong memories. Evening is at leisure in Cherrapunjee, where you can relax by a fireplace and share stories of the adventure.Overnight Stay: Cherrapunjee
Day 5 – 26 Dec: Cherrapunjee → Mawlynnong → Dawki (160 km round trip)
Today’s journey combines culture, beauty, and adventure. After breakfast, drive towards Mawlynnong, a small village that earned the title of “Asia’s Cleanest Village.” Walking through its neat bamboo houses, manicured gardens, and eco-friendly pathways feels refreshing. A short climb on the bamboo Sky Walk rewards you with sweeping views of the plains of Bangladesh stretching far into the horizon. From here, continue to Dawki, a small town on the Indo-Bangladesh border. The highlight is the Umngot River, famed for its glass-clear waters where boats appear to float on air. A boat ride on this river is magical, with sunlight turning the waters emerald green. Children especially love watching the fish swim below. By late evening, return to Cherrapunjee, enriched with both cultural and natural wonders.Overnight Stay: Cherrapunjee
Day 6 – 27 Dec: Cherrapunjee → Jowai (120 km / 4 hrs)
Leave Cherrapunjee behind and head towards the serene landscapes of Jowai, in the Jaintia Hills. Known for its hidden beauty, Jowai feels quieter and more offbeat than the popular tourist spots. The star attraction here is the Krang Suri Waterfall, one of the most picturesque waterfalls in Meghalaya. With its turquoise pool and cascading waters surrounded by lush greenery, it offers the perfect spot for family fun, relaxation, and photography. Children love playing near the shallow edges while adults soak in the beauty of the scene. In the afternoon, take a relaxed walk through the countryside, interacting with locals and enjoying the cool December breeze. This day balances the adventure of earlier days with a calm, rejuvenating pace.Overnight Stay: Jowai
Day 7 – 28 Dec: Jowai → Guwahati (170 km / 6 hrs)
After breakfast, begin the journey back towards Guwahati. The drive winds through charming hill roads, with valleys and small villages along the way. The changing landscape keeps the ride interesting, and refreshment stops give you a chance to try local snacks and tea. By evening, you reach Guwahati, Assam’s largest city. After checking in, the evening is free for shopping at Fancy Bazaar, known for its silks, handicrafts, and spices, or simply relaxing at the hotel after the long drive.Overnight Stay: Guwahati
Day 8 – 29 Dec: Guwahati Departure
On the final day of your journey, visit the sacred Kamakhya Temple, one of the most important Shakti Peethas in India, perched atop Nilachal Hill. The temple’s spiritual aura and morning rituals create a memorable farewell to the Northeast.
