Day 1: Arrival in Port Blair
Travel Distance: Airport to Hotel - 3 km | Travel Time: 15 minutes
Welcome to the enchanting Andaman Islands! Your UnSeen Andaman adventure begins as you land at Veer Savarkar International Airport in Port Blair, greeted by the warm tropical breeze and the promise of extraordinary experiences ahead. After collecting your luggage and completing arrival formalities, you'll be transferred to your comfortable hotel where you can freshen up and prepare for your first taste of Andaman's natural beauty.
The afternoon brings you to Corbyn's Cove Beach, Port Blair's most accessible and popular coastal destination, located just 8 kilometers from the city center. This picturesque beach, named after Henry Fisher Corbyn, offers a perfect introduction to the island's stunning coastline with its soft sandy shores, clear turquoise waters, and backdrop of swaying coconut palms. The beach provides excellent facilities including changing rooms, restrooms, and beachside cafes serving fresh seafood and local delicacies. You can enjoy a refreshing swim in the calm waters, try exciting water sports like jet skiing or banana boat rides, or simply relax on the beach while soaking in the tropical atmosphere.
As the sun begins to set, you'll head to the iconic Cellular Jail for an emotional and enlightening experience. The light and sound show, held in the historic prison courtyard, narrates the heroic tales of India's freedom fighters who were imprisoned in this colonial-era jail, known as 'Kala Pani' (Black Water). The multimedia presentation brings to life the struggles, sacrifices, and indomitable spirit of revolutionaries like Veer Savarkar, Batukeshwar Dutt, and many others who were exiled to these remote islands. The show combines historical facts with dramatic storytelling, creating a moving tribute to India's independence movement that will leave you with a deeper appreciation for the nation's freedom struggle.
Return to your hotel for a restful night, preparing for tomorrow's adventurous journey to the mysterious Baratang Island.
Day 2: Port Blair to Baratang to Rangat
Travel Distance: Port Blair to Baratang - 101 km (3 hours) | Baratang to Rangat - 69 km (2.5 hours) | Total Travel Time: 5.5 hours
Today marks the beginning of your expedition into the heart of middle Andaman with an early morning departure at 3:30 AM to embark on one of India's most unique and adventurous journeys. The drive to Baratang Island takes you through the protected Jarawa Tribal Reserve, requiring special convoy timings and permits. This 40-kilometer stretch through dense tropical rainforest offers a glimpse into one of the world's last remaining primitive tribal territories, where the indigenous Jarawa people have lived for thousands of years, maintaining their ancient way of life.
Upon reaching Baratang, you'll experience the island's most famous attraction - the ancient limestone caves. The journey to these geological marvels is an adventure in itself, beginning with a scenic boat ride through narrow mangrove creeks aboard speedboats. The 15-minute boat journey through the mangrove tunnels creates a cathedral-like atmosphere as sunlight filters through the dense canopy above, while the boat navigates through winding waterways surrounded by unique root systems of mangrove trees. After disembarking, a guided 1.5-kilometer trek through tropical forest leads you to the cave entrance.
Inside the limestone caves, formed millions of years ago through natural geological processes, you'll discover spectacular stalactite and stalagmite formations creating otherworldly sculptures. The caves require flashlights to navigate, and your guide will explain the fascinating geological history and formation process of these natural wonders. The calcium carbonate deposits have created intricate patterns and formations that appear almost artistic in their complexity.
After exploring the caves, you'll visit the nearby mud volcanoes, another rare natural phenomenon where methane gas pushes mud upward, creating small volcanic formations. These constantly bubbling mud formations are found in very few places on Earth, making this a truly unique experience.
Following lunch at Baratang, you'll continue your journey to Rangat, driving through scenic landscapes of dense tropical forests, occasional glimpses of the coastline, and small villages. Upon arrival in Rangat, check into your hotel and enjoy a peaceful evening in this eco-tourism hub, preparing for tomorrow's exploration of mangrove ecosystems and pristine beaches.
Day 3: Rangat to Diglipur via Scenic Exploration
Travel Distance: Rangat to Diglipur - 80 km | Travel Time: 3 hours (including stops)
Begin your day with a hearty breakfast before embarking on a scenic journey to Diglipur, the northernmost tourist destination in the Andaman Islands. Today's journey is more than just transportation; it's an exploration of middle Andaman's diverse ecosystems and natural wonders that showcase the region's commitment to sustainable eco-tourism.
Your first stop is the magnificent Dhani Nallah Mangrove Nature Walkway, located about 20 kilometers from Rangat. This remarkable 713-meter wooden boardwalk, recognized as India's longest mangrove walkway, offers an extraordinary opportunity to experience one of the world's most important ecosystems up close. Named after the indigenous mangrove species locally known as 'Dhanipatti,' this elevated pathway meanders through dense mangrove forests, providing an immersive experience without disturbing the delicate ecological balance.
As you walk along the wooden planks, you'll be surrounded by various species of mangroves displaying their unique adaptations to saltwater environments, including aerial roots, salt-excreting leaves, and viviparous reproduction. The walkway features several resting stations with benches where you can pause to observe the rich biodiversity, listen to the symphony of tropical birds, and watch for glimpses of mudskippers, crabs, and other mangrove inhabitants. The walkway culminates at the pristine Dhani Nallah Beach, renowned as a nesting ground for Olive Ridley sea turtles during the season from December to February.
Next, you'll visit the stunning Aamkunj Beach, an eco-friendly coastal paradise located 8 kilometers from Rangat in Nimbutala village. This thoughtfully developed eco-park showcases sustainable tourism practices with all facilities constructed from recycled materials found on the beach, ensuring no trees were cut for development. The beach features eco-friendly sit-outs, huts made from natural materials, and wooden benches crafted from driftwood, creating a perfect harmony between human comfort and environmental conservation.
Your journey continues to Moricedera Beach, famous for its unique twin volcanic rock formations that create a natural viewpoint overlooking the expansive ocean. These ancient lava formations provide a dramatic contrast to the typical sandy beaches, offering spectacular sunrise and sunset viewing opportunities. A short walkway between the rocks leads to wooden benches where you can sit and admire the endless horizon while enjoying the therapeutic sound of waves crashing against the volcanic rocks.
After exploring these natural wonders and enjoying a packed lunch amidst pristine surroundings, continue your drive to Diglipur through scenic landscapes of rolling hills, dense forests, and occasional coastal glimpses. Upon arrival in Diglipur, check into your hotel and spend the evening exploring the local markets and nearby attractions, preparing for tomorrow's highlight - the famous Ross & Smith Islands.
Day 4: Diglipur Island Hopping and Turtle Nesting Experience
Travel Distance: Hotel to Aerial Bay Jetty - 8 km | Boat to Ross & Smith Islands - 8 km | Hotel to Kalipur Beach - 12 km | Travel Time: 1 hour road, 40 minutes boat
Today presents the crown jewel of your Andaman adventure - the exploration of the legendary Ross & Smith Islands, followed by an authentic turtle nesting experience at Kalipur Beach. Begin early with breakfast at your hotel before heading to Aerial Bay Jetty for what many consider the most spectacular island experience in the entire Andaman archipelago.
The boat journey to Ross & Smith Islands takes approximately 20 minutes across crystal-clear turquoise waters, offering panoramic views of the pristine North Andaman coastline. As you approach these twin islands, the sight that greets you is nothing short of magical - two separate islands connected by a thin, 50-meter-long natural sandbar that appears and disappears with the tides, creating one of nature's most photogenic phenomena.
Ross & Smith Islands represent the epitome of tropical paradise, with their powder-white sandy beaches, crystal-clear shallow waters perfect for swimming, and surrounding coconut palm groves creating natural shade. The unique sandbar allows you to walk from one island to another while being surrounded by the sea on both sides - a surreal experience that provides incredible photography opportunities and a sense of walking on water. During low tide, the sandbar emerges prominently, creating distinct swimming areas on either side with different wave patterns and depths.
The islands offer excellent opportunities for snorkeling in the coral-rich waters surrounding them, where you can observe colorful tropical fish, sea anemones, and various marine life in their natural habitat. The clear visibility underwater, often exceeding 20 meters, makes it an ideal location for underwater photography and marine observation. For those preferring to stay on land, the soft sandy beaches provide perfect spots for sunbathing, beach combing, and simply soaking in the untouched natural beauty.
After spending several hours exploring both islands, enjoying water activities, and capturing memories of this unique natural phenomenon, return to Diglipur for lunch. The afternoon brings another extraordinary experience as you visit Kalipur Beach, one of the most important turtle nesting sites in the Andaman Islands.
Kalipur Beach, characterized by its distinctive volcanic black sand and clear blue waters, serves as a crucial nesting ground for four species of sea turtles: Olive Ridley, Leatherback, Hawksbill, and Green Turtles. The beach is protected by forest department personnel who maintain a turtle hatchery and monitor nesting activities throughout the season. If you're fortunate and visiting during the nesting season (December to February), you might witness the incredible sight of massive sea turtles coming ashore to lay their eggs under the cover of darkness, or baby turtles making their first journey to the ocean at dawn.
Your evening includes a guided walk along the beach with forest department personnel who will share insights about turtle conservation efforts, the challenges these ancient mariners face, and the importance of protecting their nesting habitats. Even outside nesting season, Kalipur Beach offers stunning natural beauty, clear waters suitable for swimming, and opportunities to spot other marine life.
Return to Rangat in the evening, reflecting on a day filled with unique natural wonders and unforgettable experiences that showcase the incredible biodiversity and natural beauty of the Andaman Islands.
Day 5: Rangat to Port Blair Scenic Journey
Travel Distance: Rangat to Port Blair - 170 km | Travel Time: 8 hours (including breaks and sightseeing stops)
Today's journey from Rangat back to Port Blair transforms the concept of transit into an enriching exploration of middle and south Andaman's diverse landscapes, cultural heritage, and natural wonders. Rather than simply being a travel day, this carefully planned route includes strategic stops that showcase the region's ecological diversity and historical significance while providing comfortable breaks during the long journey.
Begin with an early breakfast and hotel checkout, then embark on your scenic drive along the famous Andaman Trunk Road (ATR), a engineering marvel that connects the northern and southern parts of the archipelago through diverse terrains. Your first significant stop is at one of the designated viewpoints where you can capture panoramic photographs of the endless tropical forests, occasional glimpses of the coastline, and the undulating landscape that characterizes middle Andaman.
The journey offers numerous opportunities to observe the region's rich biodiversity, with chances to spot various species of tropical birds, butterflies, and occasionally, wild elephants that inhabit the dense forests. Your experienced driver and guide will point out interesting flora and fauna along the route, sharing insights about the ecological significance of different forest types, from mangrove ecosystems near the coast to tropical rainforests in the interior.
A midday lunch break at a local restaurant provides an opportunity to sample authentic Andaman cuisine, which uniquely blends South Indian, Bengali, and Southeast Asian influences due to the diverse cultural background of the island's settlers. The meal typically includes fresh seafood preparations, coconut-based curries, and tropical fruits that reflect the island's cultural diversity and abundant natural resources.
The afternoon portion of the journey takes you through gradually changing landscapes as you move from the forested interior toward the more developed southern regions. You'll pass through small towns and villages that showcase local life, traditional fishing communities, and agricultural areas where islanders grow tropical crops including coconuts, paddy, and various spices.
As you approach Port Blair, the landscape becomes more familiar, with increased development and the bustling atmosphere of the capital city becoming evident. Upon arrival, check into your hotel and enjoy the evening at leisure. You might choose to explore the local Aberdeen Bazaar for souvenir shopping, visit the picturesque Marina Park for sunset views, or simply relax at your hotel while reflecting on the incredible journey through some of India's most pristine natural environments.
This day of scenic transit provides a perfect opportunity to process and appreciate the diverse experiences you've had over the past few days, from ancient limestone formations to pristine island paradises, while gradually transitioning back to the more urban environment of Port Blair.
Day 6: Port Blair Historical and Cultural Exploration
Travel Distance: Various local attractions - Total 25 km | Travel Time: 4-5 hours (including visit times)
Today immerses you deeply into Port Blair's rich historical heritage and vibrant cultural landscape, providing comprehensive insights into the complex layers of Andaman's past and present. Begin with a substantial breakfast before embarking on a full day of historical exploration that reveals the profound impact these islands have had on India's freedom struggle and their continued significance in the nation's maritime heritage.
Your morning begins with a detailed exploration of the Cellular Jail National Memorial, delving deeper into its historical significance beyond yesterday's light and sound show. This imposing colonial structure, constructed between 1896 and 1906, originally featured seven wings radiating from a central watchtower, designed following the panopticon prison model for maximum surveillance of inmates. Today, only three wings remain, but they powerfully convey the harsh realities faced by political prisoners who were exiled to these remote islands.
Walking through the narrow corridors and cramped cells where freedom fighters were held in solitary confinement, you'll gain a visceral understanding of the sacrifices made for India's independence. The jail museum displays photographs, documents, and personal artifacts of prominent revolutionaries including Veer Savarkar, Batukeshwar Dutt, and Yogendra Shukla, along with detailed explanations of their imprisonment conditions, daily routines, and the various forms of physical and psychological torture they endured.
Next, venture to the historic Ross Island, accessible by a short 15-minute boat ride from Aberdeen Jetty. Once known as the "Paris of the East," this island served as the administrative headquarters of the British colonial government until a devastating earthquake in 1941 and subsequent Japanese occupation during World War II led to its abandonment. Today, Ross Island stands as a fascinating open-air museum where nature has reclaimed colonial architecture, creating a hauntingly beautiful landscape of overgrown ruins.
Explore the remnants of the British era including the Presbyterian Church with its distinctive architecture now intertwined with massive tree roots, the Commissioner's bungalow, tennis courts, swimming pools, printing press, and administrative buildings. The island also houses a small museum showcasing artifacts from both the British and Japanese periods, including weaponry, documents, and everyday items that provide insights into colonial life. Japanese bunkers and tunnels from World War II add another layer to the island's complex history.
After lunch, visit the Samudrika Naval Marine Museum, managed by the Indian Navy and dedicated to showcasing the region's rich marine biodiversity and naval heritage. The museum features five comprehensive galleries covering the geological formation of the Andaman Islands, the region's fascinating tribal cultures, extensive marine life displays including preserved specimens and live aquarium exhibits, and the strategic naval importance of these islands in India's maritime defense.
The museum's centerpiece is a massive blue whale skeleton that immediately captures visitors' attention, while other exhibits include rare coral specimens, colorful tropical fish, historical naval equipment, and detailed information about the indigenous tribes of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Interactive displays and educational materials make this an engaging experience for visitors of all ages while promoting awareness about marine conservation and the fragile ecosystems of the islands.
Conclude your day with water sports activities at North Bay Island, accessible by boat from the Andaman Water Sports Complex. This coral-rich island offers excellent opportunities for snorkeling, sea walking, scuba diving for beginners, glass-bottom boat rides, and various other water activities. The clear waters and abundant marine life make it an ideal location for underwater photography and marine observation, providing a perfect active conclusion to your day of historical and cultural exploration.
Day 7: Port Blair Heritage and Industrial Tour
Travel Distance: Various local attractions - Total 20 km | Travel Time: 3-4 hours (including visit times)
Your penultimate day in the Andaman Islands focuses on understanding the industrial heritage and continued cultural significance of Port Blair, providing insights into how this remote archipelago has evolved from a colonial penal settlement to a modern administrative center while maintaining its unique character and natural beauty.
Begin with a visit to the historic Chatham Saw Mill, established in 1883 and recognized as Asia's oldest and largest sawmill. Located on Chatham Island and connected to Port Blair by a 100-meter bridge, this industrial facility played a crucial role in the region's economic development during both colonial and post-independence periods. The mill was originally established by the British to meet local timber requirements for construction projects and later expanded to process timber for export to London, New York, and other international destinations.
During World War II, the facility suffered extensive damage from Japanese bombing, evidenced by a preserved bomb crater that visitors can observe from a specially constructed viewing platform. The mill was subsequently rebuilt and continues to operate today, processing premium Andaman timber including the famous Andaman Padauk, known for its exceptional quality and distinctive characteristics.
Your guided tour includes observation of the complete timber processing cycle, from log transportation via boats to the final production of wooden planks and finished products. Informational displays and signboards explain each stage of the process, while the on-site Forest Museum showcases exquisite woodcraft created by skilled local artisans, demonstrating the artistic potential of Andaman's diverse timber species. The museum also displays historical photographs and artifacts that document the mill's evolution and its significance in the region's industrial development.
Continue to the Samudrika Government Emporium (Sagarika), where you can explore an extensive collection of handcrafted items made by local artisans using traditional techniques and indigenous materials. The emporium features woodcarvings, shell crafts, pearl jewelry, coconut shell products, and other souvenirs that represent the cultural heritage and artistic traditions of the Andaman Islands. This visit provides an excellent opportunity to purchase authentic mementos while supporting local craftspeople and their traditional skills.
The afternoon includes leisure time for exploring Aberdeen Bazaar, Port Blair's main commercial district, where you can experience local life, sample street food, and purchase any last-minute souvenirs. The bazaar offers a vibrant atmosphere with shops selling everything from tropical fruits and spices to clothing and electronics, providing insights into the daily life of Port Blair's diverse population.
Visit Marina Park, a beautifully landscaped waterfront area that serves as a popular gathering place for locals and tourists alike. The park offers stunning views of the harbor, opportunities for pleasant walks along well-maintained pathways, and a chance to observe the constant maritime activity that characterizes this island capital. The park's peaceful atmosphere provides a perfect setting for reflection on your week-long journey through the Andaman Islands.
Your evening is free for personal exploration, whether that involves revisiting favorite locations, trying local restaurants, or simply relaxing at your hotel while preparing for tomorrow's departure. Consider visiting one of Port Blair's rooftop restaurants for dinner with panoramic views of the harbor and surrounding islands, providing a memorable conclusion to your comprehensive exploration of these remarkable islands.
Day 8: Departure
Travel Distance: Hotel to Airport - 3 km | Travel Time: 15 minutes
Your final morning in the Andaman Islands begins with a leisurely breakfast at your hotel, providing time to reflect on the incredible week of discoveries, adventures, and cultural insights you've experienced across these pristine islands. Take advantage of these last moments to capture any final photographs, pack your souvenirs carefully, and perhaps take one last stroll around your hotel's surroundings to absorb the tropical atmosphere you'll soon be leaving behind.
Depending on your flight schedule, you may have time for some final souvenir shopping at local markets or a brief visit to any nearby attractions you might have missed. The hotel staff will assist with storing your luggage if you have a later flight and wish to explore Port Blair one final time without being encumbered by your bags.
Your transfer to Veer Savarkar International Airport is timed according to your flight departure, ensuring adequate time for check-in procedures, security screening, and any last-minute purchases at the airport's duty-free shops. The airport offers a selection of local products and souvenirs, providing final opportunities to take home authentic reminders of your Andaman adventure.
As your aircraft takes off, you'll have spectacular aerial views of the Andaman archipelago, seeing from above the pristine islands, dense forests, and crystal-clear waters that you've explored over the past week. This bird's-eye perspective provides a fitting conclusion to your journey, showcasing the remarkable natural beauty and geographical diversity of these remote islands that remain largely untouched by mass tourism.
Your UnSeen Andaman journey concludes with a wealth of memories, from the historical significance of the Cellular Jail to the pristine beauty of Ross & Smith Islands, from the ancient limestone caves of Baratang to the ecological wonders of mangrove forests, and from encounters with sea turtle nesting grounds to the industrial heritage of Asia's oldest sawmill.
