Religious Places in Punjab
Punjab is home to a number of religious sites, with the most famous one being the Golden Temple. The Golden Temple is the holiest destinations for Sikhs all around the world and is visited by almost millions of devotees annually. Apart from the Golden Temple in Amritsar, there are other religious sites in Punjab which should be visited by the tourists during their trip to Punjab.
Golden Temple in Amritsar is one of the holiest and most visited religious destinations in Punjab. Popularly known as the Harmandir Sahib, it is visited by almost a million devotees annually. The Golden Temple is topped by a 750kg gold dome and is an amalgamation of Hindu and Islamic architectural styles. The other famous religious site in Amritsar which is revered by a large number of Sikhs is the Akal Takht. Built by Guru Hargobind Singh as a seat of religious and political justice for Sikhs, it stands directly opposite the Golden Temple. It existed as a symbol of political resistance against the Mughals during the 17th and 18th century.
There are also Hindu places of worship in Punjab. One of them is the Durgiana Temple in Amritsar. Also known as Laxmi Narayan Temple, it has a striking similarity in architecture to the Golden Temple. The presiding deity here is Goddess Durga. The other popular religious destination is Ram Tirath. This place is famous for hosting the 10-day Ram Mela at Valmiki Ashram, believed to be the ashram of Bhagwan Valmiki. The fair draws large crowds.
Apart from these religious destinations, there are other holy sites like Jama Masjid Khairuddin, situated in Hall Bazaar. The mosque was built in the year 1876 by Mohammad Khairuddin, and is visited by devotees, both Hindu and Muslim, in large numbers.
